SCGA gymnasts perform in January meets

ALBANY —  In January, the gymnasts from Sumter County Gymnastics Academy competed in two meets: The Round Up Invitational in Macon, Ga. and the Outlaw Invitational in Albany, Ga.

The Level 2s placed fourth as a team in Albany. Kaia MacLennan scored a 9.175 on bars for a first place finish and also finished first all around with a 35.225. Kursten Dutcher scored a 9.0 on vault for a fourth place finish, and Mia Mixon placed third on bars with an 8.875. Gracie Burrell scored an 8.95 on beam for second, Julia Clare Hubbard placed third on beam with an 8.65, and Ella Arnold also placed third on beam with her score of an 8.45.

The Level 3s also placed fourth as a team in Albany. Sophie Waldrop placed first on beam with a 9.2 and also first all around with a 35.55. Macie Deriso placed first on bars with a 9.05 and Halle Crenshaw placed first on beam with a 9.05. Kyiah Welborn placed first on vault with an 8.85, Madison Ingram placed first on floor with an 8.55, and Jaelyn Wynn placed fist on beam with an 8.55.

The Level 4s finished second as a team in Albany. Passion Thomas won first place on vault with a score of 9.325. Madison Smith placed first on floor with an 8.55. Averi Smith scored an 8.45 on vault for second place, Jadie Burrell placed third on vault with an 8.3, and Georgia Torbert also placed third on vault with a 7.95.

The Prep Optional 2 girls also finished second as a team. Brittany Eason won vault with a 9.25 and Melinda Busman placed first on floor with a 9.2. Sarah Murphy placed first on bars with an 8.95 and Rene Rix placed first on floor with an 8.75. Perri DeVane scored an 8.65 for second place on floor and Lauren Holloway placed second on bars with an 8.25.

Also competing were the Prep Optional Beginner and Prep Optional 1 girls. Neither group had enough members to compete as a team at either meet, but both brought home many individual awards. Hailey Howard placed first on bars with an 8.2 in the Prep Optional Beginner group. In the Prep Optional 1 group, Mahogany Bridges scored a 9.2 for first place on vault. Savanna Goodin placed first on vault with an 8.7 and Gracie Bush placed first on beam with an 8.5. Candice Wiggins placed second on floor with an 8.55 and Miranda Green finished fifth on floor with an 8.0

“All of our girls are working so hard to continue to improve. We have been so impressed by the work ethic of our gymnasts. You can see the drive and determination on their faces when they compete and can tell they are enjoying it.”

“We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a meet on March 2 at the Columns at Boone Park in the gymnastics center. More information will be coming, but this will be a great chance to come see our gymnasts performing.”

    Americus-Sumter High School did not have to look far for their next athletic director and head football coach. At the Sumter County Board of Education meeting on Monday night, the board approved the move of current assistant principal Dexter Dawson to lead the Panther football program and the school’s athletic department. Mason previously coached at Americus-Sumter under Michael Pollack before moving to an administrative role.

    The Georgia Southwestern golf team finished tied for seventh place at the 11-team Peach Belt Conference Championships held at Callaway Gardens on Saturday. Nicholas Ward led GSW with a 3-over par 75 total as the event was trimmed to one round due to inclement weather.

    Americus-Sumter’s boy’s soccer team closed out the regular season on Thursday night against Westover in Albany, and they could not have ended their schedule in more exciting fashion. After a long 0-0 stalemate, both the Panthers and Patriots scored a late goal to send the game into two overtime periods and a shoot-out.

    Southland Academy’s Lady Raider soccer team wrapped up the 2014 regular season on Thursday with a narrow road loss to Brookwood in region action. Southland began the game neck-and-neck with the Lady Warriors, but after outscoring their visitors 2-1 in the second half the home team was able to edge the Lady Raiders with a 3-2 win.

  • GSW No.20 bat.jpg Flagler takes series with Monday win

    Georgia Southwestern's baseball team played their last home game of the season on Sunday against Peach Belt Conference opponent Flagler College. Flagler held on for the win the after scoring at least one run apiece over the first five innings. The Hurricanes came close in a comeback attempt during the eighth inning with three runs, but GSW was unable to secure the lead. Flagler won the game 8-5, taking the finale and the series two games to one.

    When rival schools square off on the baseball diamond, the game is never over until the final out is recorded. On Thursday night in Americus, the Southland Raiders proved the validity of that statement by coming from eight runs down in the final two innings to stun the Deerfield-Windsor Knights in a huge Region 3-AAA match-up.

    Southland Academy’s Raider and Lady Raider track teams both finished as region runner-up on Wednesday, April 16 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The top four individual finishers in each event and top four relay teams qualified for next week's state track meet.

  • Lady Hurricanes softball season ends with two losses to No. 8 North Georgia

    The Georgia Southwestern softball team met in a doubleheader against No. 8 North Georgia on Sunday afternoon. The Nighthawks were able to sweep the Lady 'Canes with a 5-1 win in game one and a 5-0 decision in the nightcap. With the loss and the cancellation of their match-ups with West Georgia on Tuesday, the Lady ‘Canes season ends with GSW sporting a 26-26 overall record and a 9-13 record in Peach Belt Conference action.

    In the midst of their first losing streak of the season, the Schley County Wildcats turned to sensational sophomore pitcher Brett Usry on Tuesday evening to put their team back on the winning track. Usry delivered for the ‘Cats, tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout to ground the Marion County Eagles and improve Schley County’s record to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in Region 4-A competition.
