SCGA gymnasts perform in January meets

ALBANY —  In January, the gymnasts from Sumter County Gymnastics Academy competed in two meets: The Round Up Invitational in Macon, Ga. and the Outlaw Invitational in Albany, Ga.

The Level 2s placed fourth as a team in Albany. Kaia MacLennan scored a 9.175 on bars for a first place finish and also finished first all around with a 35.225. Kursten Dutcher scored a 9.0 on vault for a fourth place finish, and Mia Mixon placed third on bars with an 8.875. Gracie Burrell scored an 8.95 on beam for second, Julia Clare Hubbard placed third on beam with an 8.65, and Ella Arnold also placed third on beam with her score of an 8.45.

The Level 3s also placed fourth as a team in Albany. Sophie Waldrop placed first on beam with a 9.2 and also first all around with a 35.55. Macie Deriso placed first on bars with a 9.05 and Halle Crenshaw placed first on beam with a 9.05. Kyiah Welborn placed first on vault with an 8.85, Madison Ingram placed first on floor with an 8.55, and Jaelyn Wynn placed fist on beam with an 8.55.

The Level 4s finished second as a team in Albany. Passion Thomas won first place on vault with a score of 9.325. Madison Smith placed first on floor with an 8.55. Averi Smith scored an 8.45 on vault for second place, Jadie Burrell placed third on vault with an 8.3, and Georgia Torbert also placed third on vault with a 7.95.

The Prep Optional 2 girls also finished second as a team. Brittany Eason won vault with a 9.25 and Melinda Busman placed first on floor with a 9.2. Sarah Murphy placed first on bars with an 8.95 and Rene Rix placed first on floor with an 8.75. Perri DeVane scored an 8.65 for second place on floor and Lauren Holloway placed second on bars with an 8.25.

Also competing were the Prep Optional Beginner and Prep Optional 1 girls. Neither group had enough members to compete as a team at either meet, but both brought home many individual awards. Hailey Howard placed first on bars with an 8.2 in the Prep Optional Beginner group. In the Prep Optional 1 group, Mahogany Bridges scored a 9.2 for first place on vault. Savanna Goodin placed first on vault with an 8.7 and Gracie Bush placed first on beam with an 8.5. Candice Wiggins placed second on floor with an 8.55 and Miranda Green finished fifth on floor with an 8.0

“All of our girls are working so hard to continue to improve. We have been so impressed by the work ethic of our gymnasts. You can see the drive and determination on their faces when they compete and can tell they are enjoying it.”

“We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a meet on March 2 at the Columns at Boone Park in the gymnastics center. More information will be coming, but this will be a great chance to come see our gymnasts performing.”

    Georgia Southwestern State University head women's basketball coach Kelly Britsky has announced the addition of Emili Russ to the Lady Hurricane squad for the 2014-15 season.
    Russ signed with the Lady 'Canes after playing last season for Central Georgia Technical College in Macon. She will join the program in the fall with two years of eligibility remaining.

    Last year Southland Academy’s athletic program soared to new heights. Two state championships, several region championships, and many trips deep into the state playoffs marked a banner year for several Raider teams. Recently, three of Southland’s coaches were recognized by the GISA for their hard work and dedication to lead their programs to the state title.

  • Americus Travelers finish in top 3 at USSSA World Series

    The Americus Travelers 14U Baseball Club, after a stellar season on the baseball diamond, again peaked at the right time; finishing as the number three team at the USSSA Global Sports Baseball World Series in Orange Beach, Ala. last week. Coach Tim Estes’ squad entered the event with a record of 23–9 -1 on the season, and there were 35 teams from eight states competing for the title of World Series Champion.

    The Avenue of Flags flies in Andersonville National Historic Site five times per year during days of special significance. Following the end of the Independence Day holiday, the Southland Academy football team took a break from their summer workouts to help take down the 200+ flags on Monday, July 7.

    South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey has been named Athletic Director for the college effective July 1, 2014, announced South Georgia Technical College President Sparky Reeves. Frey will continue to serve as the Lady Jets head basketball coach, as well as work as a Recreation and Leisure Management instructor. Reeves also announced that Kezia Conyers and Chris Ballauer have been hired as full-time instructors and assistant basketball coaches for the Lady Jets and Jets.
