Reeves to serve as keynote speaker at Boys and Girls Club Steak and Stake Dinner July 22

AMERICUS — The Boys and Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County is pleased to announce the upcoming 16th Annual Steak and Stake Charity Fundraiser Dinner on Tuesday, July 22, 2014.

This year’s event will be held at the Georgia Southwestern State University Student Success Center Storm Dome. The Silent Auction, with many unique items, will begin at 5 p.m. followed by a dinner and program at 6 p.m.  Performances by the Boys and Girls Club’s own 2014 Americus Idol winner, Heather Grinolds, and the 2014 Americus Idol first runner-up, Regina Thomas will be featured.

Joining former United States President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the Boys & Girls Club’s Board of Directors as hosts will be this year’s keynote speaker, legendary former NFL player and head coach Dan Reeves.

Reeves was born in Rome, Ga. in 1944 and moved to Americus at the age of six. As a student at Americus High School, the standout athlete lettered four years in football, three years in basketball and three years in baseball. He was named MVP of the Georgia High School All-Star Football Game, and he won state championships with the basketball and baseball teams.

Reeves then moved on to the University of South Carolina where he played quarterback from 1962-64. He was named Second-Team All-ACC, and he set ten school records while there. He had 2,561 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and totaled three 100-yard rushing games.

Reeves then joined the Dallas Cowboys as an unrestricted free agent, where he played from 1965-72. He was the first Cowboy to ever score four touchdowns in a single game, and he held the record for most touchdowns in a season (16) from 1966-1992. He rushed for 1,990 yards as a Cowboy and scored 25 touchdowns on the ground, and he also passed for 1,693 yards and 17 touchdowns. Reeves stayed with Cowboys as a player-coach and an assistant coach until 1981.

Reeves went on to have a long, successful career as a head coach in the NFL. In 1981 he was named head coach of the Denver Broncos. He also coached four years for the New York Giants and he took over the Atlanta Falcons in 1997.

Reeves became only the seventh head coach to reach 200 career victories. He was a participant in nine Super Bowls, including four as a head coach. He compiled 12 winning seasons, participated in 50 playoff games, and won NFL Coach of the Yeah honors five separate times.

Reeves will celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary on June 27 with wife Pam. They have three children; Dana, Laura and Lee, and they have six grandchildren.

Also, appearing on the program as a special guest speaker will be Randolph Barksdale, former athletic director and head men’s basketball coach at Georgia Southwestern. Remarks and presentations will be made by City of Americus Mayor Barry Blount, Commissioner Randy Howard, Judge Lisa Rambo, Bill Harris, Sr., Rev. George Monts and Jordan Carter among others. Superior Court Judge George Peagler will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

The children of the Boys and Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County are counting on your presence for this special event. Your support is needed in the areas of ticket purchases, corporate sponsorships and/or a donation of items for the silent auction. Your contributions will make a significant difference in a child’s life by affording the Boys and Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County the means to continue enhancing and improving their services.  Their continued growth and development is the reason for this special occasion. Individual tickets are on sale for $75 and corporate reserved table rates are listed below:
