Webb adds another double-double to resume’ in Raiders win over Westwood

CAMILLA — Colby Webb is a double-double machine. In nearly every game for the Southland Raiders this season, Webb has tallied a double-double by scoring more than 10 points and pulling down more than 10 rebounds. On Friday night the senior center made sure that pattern of success continued by scoring a team-leading 13 points while also gathering in 15 rebounds to help his Raiders seal a 41-37 victory in Camilla over a very tough Westwood team.

Webb and they Raiders started their attack in the first period by outscoring the Wildcats 12-7 to claim an early lead in the non-region contest. In the second period each team would score seven points but the terrific first period would send the Raiders into the halftime break with a 19-14 lead and the momentum on their side.

After the break the Raiders stayed hot on the offensive end of the ball by outscoring Westwood 16-13 and claiming a 35-27 lead going into the final period. Despite being outscored 10-6 in the last quarter, the Raiders early lead proved to be plenty as they claimed the 41-37 victory to earn their second-straight victory.

Webb’s tremendous night led the way for the Raiders, but two other Raiders also had tremendous efforts to help propel Southland to victory. Geoffrey McDonald just missed a double-double with 11 points and seven rebounds, and Dustin Shattles added eight points in the win. “We need those three guys to score for us to win, and they did,” said Raider head coach Rundy Foster.

“We are getting better each and every game,” said Foster. “Getting Ford Roach back has allowed us to put guys back in their natural position, and Ford has a great knowledge of the game on both ends of the court that has helped us out tremendously.”

Last season the Southland Raiders came up three points short of a trip to the GISA Class AAA title game. Despite the tough semifinal loss, the 2013 season was still one of the most successful campaigns by a Raider football team in recent memory. Thirteen seniors led the way for Southland last season but the departure of those leaders, along with a new head football coach, will present several unique challenges for the Raiders in 2014.

  • Lady Wildcats drop season opener to Lee County

As the 2014 softball season gets under way, expectations are as high as usual for Head Coach Brandy Conner’s Schley County Lady Wildcat softball team. As one of the top teams in the Class A, Schley County normally opens the season with a non-region game against a much larger school known for their softball program. For the second season in a row, that team was Class AAAAAA’s Lee County High School, and for the second year in a row the Lady ‘Cats proved that they can hang with anyone on the softball diamond.
