Public Hearings: The Sumter County Board of Commissioners holds an additional public hearing — 6 p.m. June 17 in the large courtroom of the Sumter County Courthouse — to receive public input into the County increasing property taxes this year by 16 percent over the rollback millage rate for unincorporated Sumter County and the cities of Andersonvile, DeSoto, Leslie and Plains, as well as an increase in property tax by 24.19 percent over the previous rollback back rate (12.30) for the City of Americus. Tourism Council: The Americus-Sumter Tourism Council meets June 18 at the Americus-Sumter County Chamber of Commerce. The finance committee meets at 3:30 p.m., followed by the board. Both are open to the public.
Ribbon Cutting: The Americus Sumter County Chamber of Commerce hosts a ribbon cutting for the new law offices of Barnes, NeSmith and Eidson with a ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. and an open house to follow from 5-6:30 p.m. June 19 at the new location in the old Chevrolet dealership on Lee Street. The public is invited.
Six Flags Tickets: Sumter County 4-H Club has Six Flags tickets for $27. Stop by the Sumter County Agricultural Center, 331 U.S. Highway 19 South to purchase. Tickets are valid any regular operating day through Nov. 2. For information call 924-4476.

Class of 1978: The Americus High School class of 1978 is making plans now for a 30th high school reunion. The event will be Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Georgia Southwestern Golf & Conference Center in Americus. Smoke Testing: The City of Americus is rehabilitating the sewer system and will conduct smoke testing of the collection system to check for leaks. The smoke you might see is non-toxic, creates no fire hazard and will not harm children, pets or plants. People with severe asthma should avoid breating any smoke to avoid irritation. Shut-ins should be notified of the testing. If smoke enters your house, report it to the crew conducting the test to help locate the source while the test is in progress.
