Valentine Gala: Books for Sumter Children hosts its annual gala  Friday at the Griffin Bell Conference Center. The silent auction  opens at 7 p.m. with dinner served at 7:45 p.m. The GSW Ensemble  performs during the evening. Tickets are $50 each. Please RSVP by Feb. 7 by calling 928-0399. Proceeds are used to provide free books for children from birth to age 5.

Valentine’s Dance: Perfect Care invites all seniors to attend a Valentine’sDance at 2 p.m. Friday at 114 Sullivan Drive. For information call Trish 928-5616.

Free Screenings: In recognition of February being National Heart Month, Phoebe Sumter offers free blood pressure checks on Valentine's Day, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at  Wal-Mart Supercenter, 1809 E. Lamar St.

POW Program: The National Prisoner of War Museum hosts historian Justin Vance from Hawaii Pacific University at 1 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium. His subject is “Hawaiians and POWs from Hawaii in the American Civil War.”

Sumter Schools: Makeup days for students in the Sumter County School System will be Feb.17 and March 14.

Authority Meeting: The Joint Development Authority meets at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 for its regular quarterly meeting at the Rees Park Economic Development Center, 409 Elm Ave., in the second-floor meeting room. The meeting is open to the public.

Blood Drive: The Seventh Annual Josh Willis Memorial Blood Drive, sponsored by Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 21 in Americus First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Call 229-924-2026 or go to redcrossblood.org  to make your appointment today.

Chamber Concert Series: Georgia Southwestern State University is having its 2013-2014 Chamber Concert Series. This year marks the 35th season of the series. Included are Kontras Quartet — 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25; Albany Symphony featuring GSW, Albany State and Darton College Choirs, “Evening of Italian Opera”  — 3 p.m.  April 13, at Rylander Theatre. All performances take place in GSW’s Jackson Performance Hall, unless otherwise noted. Season tickets for all concerts are available: adults $45, GSW faculty and staff $40, senior citizens $35, and Habitat for Humanity volunteers $25. GSW students and children 15 and under admitted free of charge. Tickets to individual performances are also available and can be purchased at the door.
