Public hearings: The Sumter County Board of Education will hold public hearings regarding the closure of Cherokee Elementary School will be held at 6 p.m. today at Cherokee Elementary School, 300 Cherokee St., and 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Sumter County Board of Education Board Room, 100 Learning Lane. The public is welcome to attend.


Parents Meeting: There will be an important meeting for all parents of the Americus-Sumter County High Singers at 6 p.m. today in the South Campus Chorus Room. All parents are encouraged to attend.

This Week

Parent Workshop: The 21st Century Community Learning Centers, South Georgia Technical College and the Sumter County School System’s afterschool programs host a parent workshop from 5:30-6: 30 p.m. Thursday in the media center at Americus-Sumter County High School South Campus. The topic will be “Customer Service Skills.” For more information call Rhonda Reddick 942-4992.

Free Classes: Lake Blackshear Regional Library offers Personal Computer (PC) Basics at 11 a.m. Saturday. Class lasts an hour. All classes are free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Stop by the library at 307 E. Lamar St., call 924-8091 or visit for more information.

Looking Ahead

Servsafe® Training: Anyone interested in food safety can have the opportunity to improve food safety and sanitation skills. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is offering Servsafe® Training for Food Service Managers Feb. 27 and 28. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $140. Call 924-4476 for more information or stop by the Sumter County Extension Office, Sumter County Agricultural Center, 127 William Bowen Pointe.

Board Retreat: The Sumter County Board of Commissioners Retreat os at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at South Georgia Technical College in the Weyerhaeuser Room 102. The meeting is open to the public.

Pecan Meeting: A Pecan Production Meeting is at noon Feb. 29 at the Sumter County Agricultural Center, 127 William Bowen Pointe. UGA Specialists Lenny Wells, Jason Brock and Will Hudson will present the program. Earn private and commercial pesticide credit. Call 924-4476 if you plan to attend.
