Dunkley’s 3-pointers Lead Lady ‘Canes In Win Over UNC Pembroke, 67-64

AMERICUS, Ga.- Yvonna Dunkley put up 17 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Georgia Southwestern women’s basketball team (10-7 4-6 PBC) to a 67-64 win against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (6-11, 4-6 PBC) on Jan. 24 in the Storm Dome.

Shanedra Lockett helped GSW with a double-double recording 11 points and 11 rebounds and Tiara Thompson had 14 points to help the Lady ‘Canes with the win.

Shatoria Hudson put in the first basket for the Lady ‘Canes and Emili Russ made a jump shot but the Lady Braves put in a lay up and a 3-pointer to take the lead by one point. Hudson put in another basket to take the lead back and Thompson made a 3-pointer to secure a four point lead at the 11:50 mark. Hudson and Lockett both made lay ups but UNCP put in two lay ups and a 3-pointer to be behind by only one point. Lockett put in a lay up and Dunkley made her first 3-pointer to get the lead back by six with 7:16 left in the first half.

UNCP made the next two baskets to make them trail by only two. Dunkley made her second 3-pointer to put GSW’s lead back to five but UNCP made two 3-pointer’s to take the lead 22-21 with 4:02 to go. Kenyona Armstrong made a free throw to tie the game but the Lady Braves made two free throws to take the lead by two, which GSW was able to tie up again with two free throws from Thompson. UNCP got another two made free throws to take the lead once again by two. Danisha Green put in a free throw for GSW to trail by only one but the Lady Braves made another two free throws to take the lead by three. Ja’Quasha Sesler tied up the game with a 3-pointer with fifty-seconds left and Green put in a lay up and made a free throw to secure the lead for the Lady ‘Canes 31-28 going into the second half.

Lockett put in a jump shot for the first basket in the second to give GSW a five point advantage. The Lady Braves were able to tie it up with a lay up and a 3-pointer but Armstrong came back with a 3-pointer and Thompson put in a lay up and made a free throw to take back the lead by six. Hudson and Dunkley both put up a 3-pointer’s and Thompson had a lay up to take an 11-point lead with 13:45 to go in the second.

UNCP put in two lay ups and a jump shot but GSW had two free throws from Thompson and Dunkley with another 3-pointer to keep a ten point gap. The Lady Braves came back and put up a jump shot, a 3-pointer and a free throw to trail by only four. Lockett put in a jump shot and the Lady Braves put in a 3-pointer to put the game at a tie 56-56 with 4:49 to go.

Lockett put in a 3-pointer and Dunkley had two free throws to take back the lead by five but UNCP put in a 3-pointer followed by another 3-pointer by Dunkley to give GSW a five-point cushion. In the last minute Pembroke put up a lay up and a 3-pointer but GSW’s Green put in three free throws to secure the win, 67-64.

GSW out rebounded UNCP 49-42 and also had more turnovers 13-8.

Lockett and Thompson were honored in a post-game ceremony for reaching the 1000-point club earlier this season.

The Lady ‘Canes are on the road Jan. 28 to take on Clayton State at 5:30 p.m.
