ALBANY –  In a battle between the top two teams in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Division I women’s basketball conference, Darton College was able to take a 57–51 victory over South Georgia Technical College’s Lady Jets and move into first place in the conference standings with a 12–2 record. The Lady Jets slipped into second place with an 11–3 record following that heartbreaking loss.

That same night the South Georgia Technical College Jets traveled to Waycross to take on the nationally ranked South Georgia State College team and also came up short in an 83–72 match-up. South Georgia State is ranked first in the GCAA with an 11–1 record with South Georgia Tech now slipping into fourth place with an 8–6 performance.

In the women’s game, Darton was up 27–23 at the end of the first half. The Lady Jets came out in the second half and pulled ahead 38–32 based on a 15–5 run with a little over 10 minutes left in the game. The Lady Cavaliers were able to cut the lead to two points and then the lead continued to change hands with neither team getting much room to breathe until the last minute.

With 56.6 seconds left in the contest and down by three points, South Georgia Tech Lady Jets TaQuandra Mike was called for her fifth foul of the night. That foul, coupled with a technical foul on South Georgia Tech, allowed Darton to hit four consecutive free throws and take the 57–51 win and the GCAA conference lead.  SGTC’s Molly Brown also fouled out in the final minutes of the game.

TaQuandra Mike was the only Lady Jets player in double-figures with 13 points.  Freshman Deana Williams and sophomore Alexis “Bre” Armstrong both added nine points and Molly Brown scored eight points. Armstrong also pulled down 12 rebounds.

The Lady Cavaliers from Darton were led in scoring by Shane Armbrister, who had 33 points.

While the Lady Jets were battling Darton for first place in Albany, the Jets were facing South Georgia State College in Waycross in an attempt to knock off a nationally ranked team. The South Georgia Tech Jets, however, came up 11 points shy in an 83–72 loss.

The Jets were down 41–34 at the half and, despite coming back strong in the second half, they just could not close the gap. South Georgia State College was led in scoring by Jovante’ Spivey with 31 points.

The Jets and Lady Jets will both be in action at home on Saturday, Feb. 7 against Chattahoochee Technical College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Jets and Chattahoochee Tech will be battling for the number three position in the conference. Chattahoochee is currently third and South Georgia Tech slipped to fourth place after the loss to South Georgia State College.

Sophomore Day for the Jets and Lady Jets is set for Saturday, Feb. 14 against Atlanta Metro College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. There are currently 10 sophomores on the two squads. The Lady Jets have three sophomores and the Jets have seven.
