Virginia Calhoun nominated for 2015 Congress

Virginia Calhoun, freshman at Schley County High School, has received a “Certificate of Nomination for Award for the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence.” Ginny, as everyone calls her, was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, medical director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.

Ginny will serve as a delegate representing her school and state at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders June 24-26 in Boston. This is a highly selective national program honoring academically superior high school students dedicated to service of humanity through medicine. Ginny has been selected for recognition because of her outstanding academic record, leadership potential and desire to contribute to the profession of medicine as a doctor or medical scientist. This is an academic honor program with strict requirements and she must have a minimum of 3.5 GPA.

Community saddened at death of former resident

Congratulations to Schley FBLA Chapter

Congratulations to the Schley County High School FBLA Chapter for winning this year’s “Sweepstakes Trophy” for most wins at the Region Competition held recently at Marion County High School. Our students competed against 14 other schools and 23 of the students that competed are advancing to State Competition March 19-21 in Atlanta. Good luck members as you compete at the next level.

Hester-Collins wedding

William Bryant Collins Jr. and Dinah Gilliard Hester were married at 2 p.m. Jan. 2 at the Schley County Courthouse with Magistrate Judge Mitzi Way presiding.

The bride wore a lovely taupe dress and carried a single white rose in memory of her mother, with her father’s tie clasp in memory of him.

Following the wedding a reception was held at the home of the groom’s brother and sister-in-law, William (Billy) and Elene McCorkle here in Ellaville. The serving table was covered with a white linen tablecloth with a white lace overlay. A lovely center piece graced the serving table. The arrangement was beautiful with mixed white and off-white flowers. Candles also highlighted the tables. Delicious finger foods were served.

The punch bowl table was covered with white tablecloth. Pink champagne was served as well.

The highlight of the room was the cake table covered with white tablecloth and centered with a two-tier white cake with Bavarian cream filling and tan butter cream icing wit white filigree. The cake was topped with lovely white roses.

There were 26 guests attending this special event, from Cobb, Grady, Lee and Schley counties.

The bride’s parents are the late Marion and Thelma Gilliard. The groom’s mother was raised here in Schley County. His parents are the late William Bryant Collins Sr. and Mary Dwight Wall Collins. The groom’s grandparents are the late Clate and Nell Wall of Schley County.

County Line Methodist hosts Valentine Banquet

On Saturday, County Line United Methodist Church hosts its annual Valentine Banquet at 6 p.m. in the Social Hall. This will be a steak dinner. The meal is $12.50/single and $25/couple.
