Raiders, Lady Raiders gear up for GISA state tournament

The Southland Raiders and Lady Raiders basketball teams wrapped up their region tournaments on the weekend of Feb. 20-21. The Raiders finished third in GISA region 3AAA and the Lady Raiders took fourth place.

With their impressive records, both the Raiders and Lady Raiders move on to the AAA GISA state basketball tournaments, beginning Feb. 24.

The Raiders began the region tournament with a 48-40 victory over the Valwood Valiants. The Valiants finished the tournament in sixth place. The Raiders returned to action on Feb. 21, pulling in a 54-49 win over the Tiftarea Panthers, who finished fourth in the region. The Raiders’ overall record currently stands at 14-10 on the season.

The Lady Raiders earned their spot in the tourney with a 51-40 in-game win over the Valwood Lady Valiants on Feb. 16. Southland’s girls then suffered a heartbreaking 21-40 defeat in their second-round match against the Westwod Lady Wildcats. The Westwood girls took went on to take first place in the region. The Lady Raiders returned to the court on Feb. 21 to earn a fourth-place finish with a 39-35 win against the Deerfield-Windsor Lady Knights. Deerfield-Windsor took third-place honors in the region.

With their 9-14 overall season record Lady Raiders move on to the first round of the GISA AAA state tournament on Feb. 24, facing the Trinity Christian School of Dublin in Newnan at 5:30.

The Raiders take the court in the sweet 16 round of the state tournament on Feb. 25, facing the Frederica Academy Knights in St. Simon’s Island at 5:30.
