DAHLONEGA – The Georgia Southwestern baseball team was swept in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Bob Stein Stadium against North Georgia over the weekend.

GSW’s record dropped to 4-7 this spring, 1-5 in the PBC while North Georgia improved to 7-4 overall, 3-0 in conference play.

The Hurricanes travel to Valdosta State on Feb. 25 for a 5 p.m. game.

Below is the weekend recap.

GAME 1 (Sunday): NORTH GEORGIA 9, GSW 2

UNG erupted for four runs in the third inning to blow up a scoreless affair and Sam Tidaback put the game out of reach when he blasted a grand slam in the fourth.

Evan Alderman put the Hurricanes on the board in the fifth inning when his ground out brought home Will Redding.

The Nighthawks pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and GSW’s Paul Sorrow brought home the last run of the game with an RBI single in the eighth to score Devyn Newberry.

Sorrow, Brandon Weaver, and Zach Barron led GSW at the plate in Game 1 of the series with two hits apiece.

Tidaback finished 3-for-5 in the opener with five RBIs and two runs scored.

GSW starter Kyle Romstadt (1-1) lasted 3 1/3 innings before making way for Coty Graham, who pitched five innings of solid relief. Graham went 3 2/3, held UNG to one run and struck out two. Matthew Hubbard pitched a scoreless eighth.

UNG starter Brandon Agar (2-2) held the Hurricanes to one run over seven innings, allowed six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five. Chris Cobb pitched two innings of relief, gave up two hits and a run, struck out three and did not walk a batter.     

GAME 2 (Sunday): NORTH GEORGIA 7, GSW 1

The Nighthawks scored a run in three of the first four innings before putting the game out of reach with a three-run fifth. They added another insurance run in the sixth inning.

GSW was held to two hits in the game, but managed to break up the shutout with a run in the ninth when Brett Burgess walked with the bases loaded to bring home Vincent Nunez.

Nunez and Barron accounted for the two Hurricane hits.

Joey Cecere, Andrew Gordon and Tremayne Toorie had two hits apiece for UNG. Gordon belted a solo home run in the second inning.

GSW starter Earl Dupree (0-2) pitched 4 1/3 innings before making way for Kyle Spinks, who provided 2 2/3 innings of relief. Spinks held UNG to two hits and an unearned run. Jordan McIlwain pitched a scoreless eighth. The Hurricane defense didn’t help the pitching staff by committing five errors in the ballgame.

UNG brought four pitchers to the mound in Sunday’s nightcap. Starter Jacob Beauchamp (3-0) threw six scoreless innings. He held GSW to one hit, walked one and struck out six. Taylor Keinat, Avery Greer, and Phillip Taylor covered the final three frames. Greer allowed the Hurricanes’ run. He walked two, gave up a hit, and did not record an out.   

GAME 3 (Monday): NORTH GEORGIA 7, GSW 0

UNG scored all the runs they would need in the series finale when they broke up a scoreless game in the fifth inning. The main damage came from a Steven Tomlinson two-run double.

Connor Hoover provided the Nighthawks with an insurance run in seventh off his solo home run and UNG plated three more runs in the eighth.

The Hurricanes were held without a multi-hit performer at the plate for the second straight game.

Tomlinson went 3-for-5 on Monday with three RBIs. Hoover, Toorie and Bo Edwards added two hits apiece.

GSW starting pitcher, Lance Shelton, (1-2) scattered three hits over five innings. Shelton walked three, struck out three and was charged with three runs – none earned. Lawson Stewart allowed one run over two innings of work and Justin Barnes surrendered three runs, two earned, off two hits and two walks during his inning on the hill.

UNG got a complete-game shutout from Blake Gaubert (2-0). He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
