Fire investigated as arson,double homicide

Authorities from several agencies continued their investigation into a Friday evening fire that claimed the lives of mother and son Bonnie Freeman, 54, and Dallas Freeman, 33, at 780 R.W. Jones Road in eastern rural Sumter County.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Capt. Ralph Stuart told the Times-Recorder Saturday afternoon that the investigation is into an arson and double homicide and the bodies will be sent to the State Crime Lab for autopsy on Monday. He said an arson dog from Chickamauga came to assist in the investigation and the State Fire Marshal’s dog was also being employed to check for excellerants at the site.

Stuart said they responded to the fire at 6:09 p.m. Friday and upon arrival, the western half of the house was engulfed in flames. He said the entire home sustained fire and smoke damage. The two bodies were found inside.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 3 Office in Americus is also involved in the investigation.

Authorities were also looking for a vehicle that had been seen at the resident around 1:30 p.m. Friday.
