Ellaville-Schley Historical Society plans annual membership meeting

At 7 p.m. March 7, the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society hosts its annual membership meeting at the Ellaville City Center. This is a special meeting that all members look forward to. They like to hear the announcements, hear the history that will be told as well as seeing historical artifacts.

Everyone is asked to share some history that night as well as bring some things to show and tell about. We are also asking all members to bring any history that they have that we can put into our new history book we are going work on real soon. Bring your family lineage to put into the book.

Bring Ideas to help us out in preserving our history. We have a lot of ideas but can always use the members’ and others’ ideas. We will be asking for the histories of businesses, old and new.

Membership is open to anyone who cares about our history. Please invite your family and friends to join us.

There will be applications at the meeting. Remember that any donation that is made to the historical society is tax-deductible, including dues.

Refreshments will be served after the meeting so everyone can talk about the history and there will be committee sheets for anyone to sign to be on any special committee. So be thinking what you’d like to serve on.

Ellaville United Methodist has special speaker Sunday

At 11 a.m. Sunday, Dedra Cumbly is guest speaker at Ellaville United Methodist Church. She will be speaking on her blindness and what all she can do as if see can see.

Family visits Bobby Young family

On Feb. 12, Eddie and Evie Mae Goodman of Fitzgerald visited the Bobby Young family. They arrived about 10:30 a.m. and had lunch and visited a while with the Youngs.

Bobby Young and Eddie Goodman are first cousins. It’s always a pleasure to see family and talk about old times as children. It was really fun just and listen to these men talk about when they were boys and what they did.

County Line Methodist holds Valentine Dinner

County Line United Methodist Church held its annual Valentine Dinner on Feb. 14 in the church Social Hall.

Guest tables were covered with white table cloths with center pieces of bud vases with three red roses at each plate setting. There were red and white valentine napkins along with a place card for each guest.

The center of the counter was decorated with a large arrangement: a basket filled with red roses, baby’s breath and greenery. On each end of the counter were arrangements, and between the end arrangements there was greenery, pine cones, cotton, red berries and baby’s breath.

A delicious meal was served: steaks, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls, pound cake for dessert, coffee and tea. This meal was served on red plates which made the dinner so pretty. County Line always goes out for this special dinner party that they have each year.

Guest speaker was introduced by Sammy Lee. Guest speaker was Careen Strange. She is our local author and gave a very impressive talk about love, about rearing her and Burt’s five boys and having a career of teaching English. She said that God spoke to her and gave her a message to write a book to teach young mothers many things. The name of her book is “Hello! Young Mothers: A peek behind the Motherhood Curtain.”

The author said there are four things that we should remember:   Do what God tells you to do; don’t let your weakness be a excuse for not following God; don’t let fear stop you; and most importantly, don’t wait until it’s to late.

Everyone enjoyed ourselves that night, being with friends that we hadn’t seen in awhile, enjoying a great meal and hearing the Stranges speak.

Pleasant Hill Baptist sponsors Youth Night

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church sponsors a big Youth Night at 5 p.m. March 7 at the church, located on U.S. Highway 19 North at Opossum Trot Road, nine miles north of Ellaville.

They are planning a big bonfire and will be serving hot-dogs with all the trimmings as well as S’mores and will also have music.

The youth of the church went on a Mission Trip in early December to Top Most, Ky. They carried food, clothing, blankets and more to these very needy people for Christmas. The youth were so surprised to see how other people live that are less fortunate than themselves. A youth went up to one of the adult leaders and told the person that he knows that it’s “better to give than to receive.”

Nineteen went on this mission trip. They are planning another trip for this year. The Youth Group is growing and they have Sunday School classes for all age children and they are having a real good time.

Schley County 4-H selling Vidalia onions

The Schley County 4-H Club is taking orders for Vidalia onions to help with the expense of attending camp this summer. The onions are $10 for 10 lbs.

Orders can be made with any 4-H’er that will be attending camp or you may call Brenda Welch at the Schley County Extension Office at 937-2601 to place a order any time from now until the deadline of April 16. The onions will be delivered May 7.

This year the fifth- and sixth-graders are going to Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island for a week of fun and adventure. They have a few vacant places left if anyone would be interested in going to camp.

The seventh- and eighth-graders are going to Fortson 4-H Center or Wahsega to different summer camps.
