Tompkins hits ninth home run of season for GSW softball, Lady ‘Canes split double-header

CENTRAL, S.C- The Georgia Southwestern softball team (9-17) split on March 16 with Southern Wesleyan (11-9) at Varsity Field.

GAME 1: GSW 7, SW 6

With two outs at the top of the first and Rachel McElroy on base, heavy hitter Keri Tompkins knocks one out of the park to give GSW a 2-0 lead. Tompkins is now second in the Peach Belt Conference with nine home runs, just two behind first place.

Southern Wesleyan was able to bring in three runs in the bottom of the first to take a one run lead then brought in another run in the second and two more in the fourth to lead 6-2.

The fifth and sixth inning went scoreless and GSW was still four runs behind going into the top of the seventh where they started to rally. Erin Steele singled to left center and advanced to third when McElroy hit a double up to right center. Both Steele and McElroy scored when Savannah Carlisle hit a single up the middle. Tompkins singled up the middle sending Carlisle to second.

After a pitching change, Haley Warner hit one up the middle to move Carlsile to third and Tompkins to second. Graysen sanders hit one to left center and brought in Tompkins and Warner to tie the game.

Southern Wesleyan kept the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, pushing it to an international tie-breaker. Chelsea Littlejohn was placed on second and advanced to third off a bunt from Steele and scored when McElroy hit a double to right center.

The Lady ‘Canes defense was able to keep Wesleyan from scoring in the tie-breaker and won the game 7-6.

The Lady ‘Canes finished the game with 15 hits, seven runs, seven RBIs, and two errors.

Savannah Carlisle (2-7) took the win for the Lady ‘Canes after pitching four innings. She gave up zero hits, zero runs, walked one and struck out four.

Haley Goodson started the game for GSW and pitched four innings. She gave up six hits, six runs, walked two and struck out one.

GAME 2: GSW 2, SW 3

The Lady ‘Canes led off the first innings with two runs. Steele scored off a single from Carlisle, who then scored off a double from Tompkins. Wesleyan scored one in the first and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, GSW was unable to rally back like they did in game one and lost by one run.

GSW finished the game with nine hits, two runs, two RBIs and two errors.

Carlisle (3-7) took the loss for GSW after pitching 5.1 innings, gave up right hits, three runs, walked none and struck out two.

Brittany Childs pitched 0.2 innings, gave up zero hits, zero runs, walked none and stuck out two.

The Lady ‘Canes play at Emmanual on March 17 at 2 and 4 p.m.
