Schley Ministerial Association to hold benefit

The Schley County Ministerial Association has its annual Benefit Sale starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 11 in the northern part of the old Greenfield Building next to the old parking lot on Industrial Drive in Ellaville. Look for the big yellow signs that will guide you where to turn off onto the road to the sale.

The ministerial association has been able to help families in need with the proceeds from these sales and with the community’s help. The ministerial association will be able to continue sharing the love of Jesus Christ by ministering to these in need.

The youth of Tabernacle Church will be serving food during the sale with breakfast at 8 a.m.

Booths will be rented out to individuals to sell their own items. The cost of each booth is $10. All renters must bring their own chairs and tables to display the goods they are selling. Call 937-5001 to reserve your space.

There will be a silent auction of special items including a storage building.

Many thanks go out to everyone who has shown their support through donations and hard work. Additional items are always needed, big or small.

Schley 4-H’ers take honors at Cloverleaf DPA

On March 21, the Schley County Cloverleaf 4-H’ers traveled to Mossy Creek Middle School in Houston County to participate in the District Project Achievement and all came home winners.

Brenda Welch said. “They were already winners before they left for competition. It took a lot of practice for each young person to prepare for this event.”

Each fifth- and sixth-grade 4-H’er gave an illustrated talk or demonstration on a subject of their choice. Most demonstrations lasted about four to six minutes and the 4-H’ers used two or three posters or props in their demonstrations.

4-H’ers can chose from 64 subjects for their demonstration. The subjects that can be selected are international, veterinary science, air science, computer, water conservation, photography, public speaking, plant and soil, performing arts and safety, just to name a few.

If you have an interest in 4-H there is a place for you in 4-H.

Competition for Cloverleaf 4-H’ers ends at the District competition, but prepares them for more advanced competition as they get older.

The 4-H’ers participating in the Houston County Cloverleaf DPA were fifth-graders Ghufran Bhatt, outdoor survival, first place; Lilly Grace Harbuck, horse project , third place; Grace Hodges, dog care & training, second place; Abigail Harnage, computer technology, fourth place; Hunter Hockman, history, fifth place: Liberty Justice, safety, first place; Cody Myrick, entomology, first place; Sierra Desiree , human development, first place; Lauren Williams, veterinary science, first place; Makayla Wills, performing arts general; second place. She was also invited to perform for everyone before the Awards Assembly. She played the guitar and sang “Simple Man.”

Sixth-grader Addison Lamb won first place for her horse project.

Thanks to Peggy Skotzky for driving the bus as always’ she is so helpful when needed.

The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service 4-H and Youth programs have helped Georgia’s youth learn by doing special projects of their own “Best Even Better.”

Schley 4-H’ers sell Vidalia onions

The Schley County 4-H’ers are selling Vidalia onions as a project to help with the different 4-H activities. They have this sale every year and the onions are real good.

They are 10 pounds for $10. The last day you can order is April 16, and they will be delivered to you on May 7. For information call Brenda Welch at 937-2601.

Schley Family Connection meets

On March 26, Schley County Family Connection met at noon in the City Hall Conference Room.

John Greene called the meeting to order. The Rev. Jesse Carson asked the blessing. A delicious meal was served. John started the meeting by passing out surveys that were given to the students in 6th-12th grades. All of these students took the survey during home room. Answers on the survey will be announced later.

John spoke on “National Child Abuse Prevention Month” in April. So when you see the pinwheels in the City Park you’ll know that it’s Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Guest speaker was Ty Torrance, our new county agent. He represents Schley and Marion counties. He is serving his first time as a county agent. He’s from Reidsville. He said that his father and grandfather were county agents. He is engaged to be married to Rachelle O’Neil of Columbus, and they will be living in Buena Vista.

Amy Boney spoke on behalf of the Lighthouse Children Advocacy Center of Americus. She spoke on the special needs of children in our area. A special clinic for these special children is being organized now.

Karen Albritton spoke on behalf or the Lighthouse as well and talked about the programs with some additional information.

Schley County’s new health nurse Kristy Smith was introduced. She gave a lot of information.

Elaine Gillispie spoke on behalf of Congressman Sanford Bishop.

Pascal Hollis spoke on behalf of the Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191, telling about renovation of the Legion.

Nancy McMath Young spoke on behalf of the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society, telling about the Memorial and Honor Wall that will be in the Schley County Courthouse rotunda.

Linda Adams spoke on behalf of the Schley County Community Foundation. They are getting up a public playground for our children. It will be at the Recreation Department.

Stephen Woodson spoke on behalf of the Truancy Office for Schley County. He was real happy that he had one case and it was dropped.

The next meeting for Family Connection is April 23.

Springtime Ellaville had a cold day

On Saturday, March 28 Springtime Ellaville had a real cold day but everything went on as planned. The Ellaville -Schley County Chamber of Commerce held the annual springtime event.

They had 70 booths; a lot of people came though it was windy and cold. There were a number of drawings that day. They had a 50/50 drawing and Teresa Owens won it. Mary Ellen McCorkle had a Tupperware drawing won by Josey Wilder.

Everyone that raced seem to have really enjoyed it. When all racers came across the finish line, paint of all colors was thrown on each racer.

The parade was enjoyed by all . Children had their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. People that were raised here came to see old friends. Entertainment was all day long and into the night. Brandon Wheeler played for the night time entertainment until 10:30 p.m.

Everyone is looking forward to next year’s event.
