AMERICUS — South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) will host its first ever Minecraft Camps for students ages six to 13 on both the Americus and the Crisp County Center campuses this summer as part of its continuing education offerings.

The first camp will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon July 13-17 in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus. The second camp is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-noon July 20-24 at the Crisp County Center in Cordele. Spaces are limited so interested persons are urged to apply now.

The cost of the Minecraft Camp is $150 per camper. There is a discount of $15 for each additional family member. A PC Minecraft account from www.minecraft.net is required for this camp.  Refreshments will be provided.

Rand Fernandez, an engineering consultant with a background in chemical engineering, is the instructor.

Minecraft is a sandbox video construction game designed/created by Notch of Mojang. The game allows players to build and destroy different types of blocks in a three-dimensional environment.  Other activities in the game include exploration, gathering resources, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival modes where the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly and an adventure mode where players play custom maps created by other players.

Campers will have “Survival Mode” and “Creative Mode” challenges where they will learn to collaborate, innovate and problem solve while having fun playing Minecraft. They will learn to use redstone to create repeaters, clocks, and circuits. Advanced campers will learn how to install mods and manage game profiles.

The campus’ private game server will allow campers to collectively work together on projects for fun and creative group work. The instructors will operate as “Construction Managers” to help each camper’s ideas be fully realized in their Minecraft world.
