COLUMBUS — Mr. Henry Alfred “Scrap” Dupree Sr., 84, passed away on Friday evening, April 24, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, at Central Baptist Church, with Dr. Bryan Myers, the Rev. Bill Dupree and the Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening, April 27 at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St.

Mr. Dupree was a resident of the Gardens at Calvary Assisted Living in Columbus for the past three years, having lived in Sumter County his whole life up until that point.

Born Nov. 18, 1930, he was a son of the late George Cleveland Dupree and Nereus Allen Dupree. He was preceded in death by his three siblings: Mary Edith Dupree Young, William Benjamin Dupree and Julian Virgil Dupree.

A 1948 graduate of Americus High School, he attended Georgia Southwestern College and was a faithful employee of Shiver Lumber Co. for 54 years.

He was raised in the Shiloh Baptist Church and had been a faithful member of Central Baptist Church for 54 years. He was a past active deacon and Sunday School superintendent. His greatest love was being chairman of the Benevolence Committee, ministering to untold needs within the church and the community throughout the years. He was honored to have “The Alfred Dupree Sunday School Class” named for him. His motto in life was “Do what is right, Do your best, and Care about people.” Everyone who knew or had “just met” him were drawn to his humor and compassion.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Ann Arnett Dupree, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on July 10, 2014; his children: Henry Alfred Dupree II “Fred” (Sara) of Newnan, and Lee Ann Dupree Tipton (Ric) of Columbus; grandchildren: Henry Alfred Dupree III (Alyssa) of Senoia, Charles Oliver Dupree of Anniston, Ala., Neil Joseph Tipton of Columbus and Daniel Reagan Tipton of Columbus; a very special brother-in-law, Frank Ethridge, a sister-in-law, Ann Brown, both of Louisville, Ga.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins who were close to his heart.

The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the staff and aides at The Gardens at Calvary Assisted Living and to the doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospital ICU.
