GSW golf earns bid to NCAA DII regionals

AMERICUS – For the third time in four years the Georgia Southwestern men’s golf team earned an invitation to participate in the NCAA postseason.

The NCAA has announced the field of 80 teams and 32 student-athletes competing as individuals that have been selected to participate in regional competition of the 2015 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships.

Nicholas Ward, Chris Low, Anders Olsson, Hayes Dupree and Fraser Johnston will represent GSW May on 4-6 at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla.

GSW will join four other Peach Belt Conference programs at the upcoming NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional. The Blue & Gold, currently ranked 19th in the country by the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll will join No. 3 USC Aiken, No. 5 Flagler, No. 15 Columbus State and Georgia College as PBC members competing in the NCAA’s regional play.

The regional, which consists of 20 teams, 10 from each the South and Southeast regions, will take place Monday, May 4 through Wednesday, May 6. The event will be contested at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club and is being hosted by Saint Leo University. Each day will consist of one 18-hole round contested at the par-72, 7,137-yard course.

Three other 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 4-6. 20 teams and eight individuals will compete at each regional and the top three teams and the top two individuals not with a team from each regional, regardless of region, will advance to the finals. The remaining eight-team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year’s medal/match play portion of the championships. The South/Southeast regional will produce six bids to the finals.

Head coach Darcy Donaldson finds his squad in a very competitive regional. The South/Southeast portion of the tournament bracket finds 14 of the top 25 programs in the country are competing together including; No. 1 Nova Southern, No. 2 Lynn, No. 3 USC Aiken, No. 4 Barry and No. 5 Flagler.

GSW is looking to finish in the top seven of the twenty teams in the regional in order to qualify for the finals, May 18-22, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C. hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University.
