Justice family attended Harris family reunion

The weekend of April 25 the Wilbur Justice family attended the annual Harris family reunion in Stockbridge. Those that attended from Ellaville were Wilbur and Vicki Justice, Brian and Sandy Justice and Jason Justice and his two daughters Liberty and Dixie Justice.

The Harris family always get together every year in April. The family enjoys visiting and talking about some of their grandfathers’ many stories and jokes and some of the things he did that made him so special.

A large group attended despite bad weather and storms. Each family took their favorite dish which proves there are a lot of good cooks in the family .

The best barbecued ham and ribs ever made and great side dishes and delicious dessert were served. They are already planning their next reunion in April 2016.

Public meeting held on courthouse renovation project

At 6:30 p.m. April 28 the Schley County Board of Commissioners held a public meeting in the courtroom of the court house annex.

Commissioner Douglas Jamieson gave the report on the renovation of our courthouse that’s underway now. He said both floors are being renovated but the first floor is being worked on currently. They are rewiring the entire courthouse and they are putting heating and air throughout the building as well as an elevator. He said the wiring is about 90 to 95 percent complete. They are also repairing the windows and putting them back in.

The commissioner said that the old sheriff’s office that was once on the first floor on the side of the courthouse will be the new sheriff’s office. They have torn out a wall to make a larger room for the sheriff. The old tax office will hold the Schley County Extension Office, and 4-H will meet in the old jury room upstairs. The Chamber of Commerce will be in the courthouse as well. The Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society Inc. will have the former Magistrate Judge’s Office. The Historical Society plans on putting a museum inside as well. The rotunda will be brought up to code as everything else with the wainscoating.

They have asked for volunteers to help do some things like scraping off paint and other tasks.

The community thanks the commissioners for getting this special place fixed up and Kings Customs for doing such a great job. This courthouse is on National Register and this is a special place in Ellaville and Schley County and we all love it.

Schley has community-wide Ag Day

The Schley County Farm Bureau held a community-wide agriculture day May 2 on the field across from Schley County Elementary School on the east side of old U.S. Highway 19.

Katina Fields, office manger of Schley County Farm Bureau, has really been working to bring farming heritage back for the children and adults to see and enjoy. Included in this special event, “Life on the Farm,” from Fort Valley State University, were live exhibits featuring cows, chickens, goats and they showed how farm life is and how it effects everyone on a daily basis.

The Schley County High School FFA director, Eric Sellars presented projects based on different farm commodities. There were other displays of agriculture-related businesses in the area such as Reid Brothers Irrigation, Pioneer Seed, Crop Production Service, the Forestry Commission and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Fox International brought a large tractor and Billy Lightner brought antique farm equipment. James Brantley brought trail Horses and a pack mule.

A few of Georgia Farm Bureau’s members were there for everyone to learn about Case IH with equipment on display, and the incredible Air-Evac Flight team had their helicopter at the site.

Ellaville-Schley rabies clinic is Saturday

The Ellaville-Schley County Rabies Clinic is from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Schley County Extension Office on U.S. Highway 19 North.

The inoculation is $10. Plan to bring your pets and protect them from wild animals that have rabies.

A Macy-Grace Piano Studio holds recital

A Macy-Grace piano students held their annual recital at 2 p.m. May 2 at Ellaville United Methodist Church.

Mary Nan Pilcher, piano teacher, welcomed everyone. The Rev. Lowell Layman offered an opening prayer.

The recital began with Grace Layman and Macy Hall playing “Chopsticks” as a duet. Others playing in the recital were Tillary Tyler playing ” Mary Had A Little Lamb “and “Yankee Doodle:” Mary Kate Still played “Fur Elise;” Conner Childs played “Blue Scales:” Chelic Woody played “The Star Spangled Banner;” Cesaleigh Snider played “The Blue Danube” and “Lord, We Praise You;” Dunlie Caslteberry played “Morning Has Broken” and “Alouette;” Maclyn Anthony played “Canon:” Mikayla Willis played “Amazing Grace;” Kelly Morrow played “Cradle Song” (Brahms’ Lullaby); Ashleigh Childs played “Blank Space;” Liberty Justice played Over the Rainbow;” Grace Layman played “The Entertainer;”; Macy Hall played “Let It Go.”

After the recital students were presented their certificate and piano medallion from their teacher. These student s will always remember this special time. A reception was held in the Social Hall where the teacher served mini-cupcakes and punch.

A Macy-Grace Piano Studio began in 2012, with only two students Macy Hall and Grace Layman. Although Grace will be moving this year, the name of the studio will always be the same.

Community saddened at death of local resident

The community is sad to have heard of the death of Mildred Holloway Hite. She Mildred was born and raised here in Schley County, and is related to a lot of people here through the Robinson and Holloway families.

A Celebration of Life service was held at noon Sunday. The preacher spoke and then her two daughters, Jan and Sue, spoke and telling things about their mother. Her granddaughter Elizabeth also spoke.

We all that knew Mildred will miss her sweet smile and her kindness to others.

Local couple joins Americus High class reunion

On the evening of May 2, the Americus High School Class of 1960 celebrated its 55th year of graduation. This special event was held at 7 p.m. at The Station in downtown Americus.

Jimmy Thaxton welcomed everyone and David Kitchens asked the blessing.

There were school friends that we had not seen in a while. Bobby and Nancy Young were invited to attend this special event. Nancy would have graduated with this class, but her family moved to Ellaville where her father opened a business.

There were about 38 members of the class and some spouses who attended.

Everyone always looks forward to the next get-together.
