AMERICUS – South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) faculty and staff members recently donated their time and dollars to their local American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. The theme of this year’s Relay was “Gaming for the Cure—Knock Cancer off the Board.”

SGTC chose to incorporate its current theme—Experience LIFE @southgatech—by featuring the game of LIFE and the slogan “Imagine LIFE without Breast Cancer.” A total of $714 was raised by SGTC faculty and staff members of the Crisp County Center campus, as well as Student Leadership Council members. Lisa Drake of Cordele was the student who was credited with raising the most money as an individual.

The South Georgia Tech Welding and Joining Technology class and instructor Brenda Gilliam on the Crisp County Center campus donated a fire pit and yard art for a raffle. Donzell Watson won the drawing for the fire pit, and Andy Mangden was the winner of the ornamental yard art. D.W. Persall of Cordele, NTHS President, and SGTC Computer Information Systems instructor Randy Greene created a special LIFE-themed car for the booth.

Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk with teams of people who camp out around a track. Members of each team take turns walking around the track, and food, games, and activities provide entertainment.
