A special trip to Colorado for the Justices

On Friday, May 1, Wilbur and Vicki Justice went to North Georgia (Sautee Nacoochee) to meet Vicki’s sister, Iris and husband Joe Menendez. The next morning Joe returned to Greenville, S.C., where he’s receiving additional training for a job promotion that he’s received from Michelin Corp.

Wilbur, Vicki and Iris drove to Greeley, Colo., where Iris and Joe will be making their new home. It was about a 24-hour drive, which they broke up with an overnight stay in Kansas.

The moving van did not arrive until Thursday, so Wilbur, Vicki and Iris enjoyed the sights. They enjoyed a delightful ride into Estes Park, Colo. The weather was different from South Georgia; the temperature was 40-50 degrees. There’s not any trees at all, so all you see is the open sky.

Joe flew to meet them on Friday night, and Saturday it snowed. On Sunday Joe and Wilbur flew back to their respective homes while Vickie stayed to help Iris fix up her new home. On the next Friday Jacob and his wife Christina Menendez of Pace, Fla.,( Iris and Joe’s son and daughter-in-law) joined them for a short visit. After helping her sister set up her new home Vickie flew home on Sunday and Wilbur and Liberty Justice met her at the Atlanta airport. Liberty couldn’t wait to see her grandmother.

Summer Cafe will be be held for youth

This is just a reminder about the Summer Cafe that will be held again this summer, hosted by United Holiness Church. Beginning June 1, the cafe will be open from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays, continuing through July. The church will provide a van to transport to the site, but all children must live in the city of Ellaville to qualify for transportation. This is not based on your income.

Anyone 18 years of age or younger can receive free meals at the church. All the food is prepared from Feeding The Valley in Columbus and is prepared by Safe Serve Certified Staff and transported to Ellaville, Buena Vista, Preston, Richland and Lumpkin in special containers to keep the food hot or cold.

Call John Greene and register your child. He has to know a week in advance so there will be enough food. Call John at 937- 5334. This is free, so don’t be left out.

Schley County Library to have summer reading program

The Schley County Library sponsors the annual Summer Reading Program with many activities this summer.

This special event is for all school children June 2-July 7. All programs will be held at 1 p.m. every Tuesday at the Schley County Board of Education cafeteria.

The schedule is:

June 2 — Art Apsma, magician

June 9 — Barry Stewart Mann, dramatic story teller

June 16 — Wildlife Wonders with exotic animals

June 23 — Tracy Walker, musical story teller

June 30 — Linda Adams, crafts

July 7 — Last day with a Pizza Party and awards and certificates for children who attended.

All reading logs must be turned in by June 30. Children of all ages may attend that are in school. For more information call Jerry Franklin or Adrian Hollomon at the library 937-2004. Make plans for your children to attend and learn.

Schley County High School holds graduation ceremony

Schley County High School held its graduation at 10 a.m. May 23 on the John Gill Stadium football field.

Valedictorian Sobia Kwalid Bhatti gave her speech as did salutatorian Whitney Lynn Worth.

There were 89 graduates: 35 honor graduates and 54 regular graduates.

Ellaville and Schley County congratulate each graduates.

Retirement reception for Dru Hill is today

On Friday, May 29, Ameris Bank is honoring Drucilla Hill with a  retirement reception from 2-4 p.m. in the bank lobby.

Dru has worked for the three banks for 38 years and has been a loyal and dedicated employee.

Ellaville-Schley County and surrounding communities are invited to come and offer her congratulations on her retirement. We will all miss her sweet face and smile.
