Former President Jimmy Carter is on prayer lists around the world as he undergoes treatment for cancer. We want him to know that we here at the Americus Times-Recorder, which he considers his hometown newspaper, are also behind him. He and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Jimmy Carter, along with his wife Rosalynn Carter, have accomplished so much good in this world through their work with The Carter Center. Over three decades of working for the good of others since they left the White House, it’s difficult to grasp the impact of their efforts.
Among the Carters’ accomplishments of humanitarian work are the following: eradicated Guinea world disease from the face of the earth; observed elections in 38 countries to build and strengthen democracy; helped to establish a village-based health care system in Africa; pioneered programs to prevent/control devastating neglected diseases in Africa and Latin America; worked to improve mental health care and diminish the stigma of mental illnesses; and continuously working for peace around the globe.
The former president, a farmer himself, has also, through his work with The Carter Center, been able to teach farmers how to increase their crop production which has helped people to help themselves.
Jimmy Carter is a good man, a kind-hearted human, a fine southern gentleman, a Sunday school teacher, an excellent husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, uncle and yes, friend. He embodies so many characteristics of what is good and right in this world.
Hang in there, Mr. President. Keep fighting the good fight. There’s still work to be done.
