AMERICUS — Mrs. Jennie Hancock, a lifelong Americus resident, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015.  Jennie’s parents Tosh and Mary Coptsias and her sister Pat emigrated from the island of Lemnos, Greece, through Ellis Island in 1929. Jennie was raised in Americus along with her sister, Pat Coptsias McCurry and brother Rigas Coptsias. She met her husband, Steve Hancock, as a student at Georgia Southwestern College. Jennie and Steve made their home in Americus where they raised their sons, Don and Steve Hancock. Jennie worked in the grocery business with her father at Felder Street Grocery and later with her husband at Hancock’s Grocery and RIO Thrifty Foods. She was a hard working woman and was dedicated to her family’s well being.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Lyanne Hancock of Plains, Ga., Don and Teresa Hancock of Cropwell, Ala.; grandchildren Nick and Valerie Hancock and their son Will of Peachtree City, Ga., Wes Hancock of Athens, Ga., Anne and Mark Smits of Alexandria, Va., Chris and Jennifer Hancock and their sons Caleb and Joshua of Palm Desert, Calif.; sisters-in-law Polly Hancock of Americus, Ga., and Sandra Coptsias of Plains, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Jennie is preceded in death by her husband Steve Hancock, her sister Pat McCurry, her brother Rigas Coptsia, and brothers-in-law Roland Hancock and Jim McCurry.
Graveside services will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Andersonville National Cemetery. The Rev. Earl Dunmon will officiate. The family will receive friends at 378 Yankee Road, Plains, Ga. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at Aldridge Funeral Services. The family thanks the caregivers at Sumter Retirement Village and the staff of Pruitt Hospice. Jennie had a lifelong love for her dogs and cats.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sumter Humane Society, 108 Industrial Blvd. Americus GA 31719.
