AMERICUS — The three-day Labor Day holiday weekend was relatively quiet, according to local authorities.
Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith said overall, it was a good weekend.
“We had a lot of calls — calls from Plains about all the people being in Plains. We didn’t have any shootings or stabbings, but we had a couple of mental patients that needed to be somewhere. The river (Flint) was full and the weather was nice. Lots of people got out and grilled and did things with the family. We had our normal calls from the river about loud music. It was a safe weekend.”
The sheriff said there had been 14 or 15 fatalities across the state over the weekend, and a serious accident in Sumter County on Ga. Highway 27 East, which was worked by the Georgia State Patrol, Post 10, Americus. Repeated phone calls to Post 10 were met with a busy signal.
Americus Police Interim Chief Maj. Herman Lamar reported a quiet weekend.
“It was no more than usual. There were several entering autos; about normal. There was nothing exceptional or unusual,” he said.
