AMERICUS — The Office of International Programsat Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) is collaborating with members of the campus and local community to bring Masankho Banda, a teaching artist from Malawi to GSW and Americus as part of the university’s “Windows to the World” program in early November. He will be in the southeastern U.S. in late October, and is excited about visiting GSW and Americus in early November.
Masankho will be able to work with local organizations, classes and community groups to facilitate any of the following types of activities or workshops: Community building, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, cultural awareness and celebration of cultural identities, Malawi cultural traditions and stories that speak to respecting and valuing each other, affirming cultural histories and heritages and Mini African Dance & Drumming Residency culminating in a performance.
Sarah Speir, Ph.D., director of the Office of International Programs at GSW, said she has previously worked several times with Masankho as an artist-in-residence on the university with campus classes and organizations, K-12 schools and leading teacher workshops. Masankho participates as a regular Outreach Artist with LEAF in Schools and Streets (http://www.theleaf.org/lss/), based in Asheville, N.C.
