AMERICUS — When a heavy thunderstorm moved through this area around 3 a.m. Tuesday, there was lots of thunder and lightning, heavy rainfall and some wind.
Nigel Poole, Sumter County EMA director, said rainfall was heavy, but he didn’t know the amount.
“We had a lot of water fall in a little bit of time,” he said. “On Furlow Street (in the 900 block), the water got up to about three feet.”
He said Americus Fire & Emergency Services helped to evacuate the area.
“With the assistance of the American Red Cross, we were able to put about five or six families up in a safe place for the night,” he said. “They got the rest they needed to see about cleaning up their homes this morning.”
On West College Street, a large tree limb fell on a car, and trees were down in other areas as well. On Wildwood Circle, a large pine tree was toppled, taking power lines with it. Residents were still without power as of lunch time Tuesday. In the Lake Hancock area, a large oak tree fell.
