Schley auction – a great success
I want to commend Nancy McMath Young, President, and all members of the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society for conducting a very successful benefit Auction on Saturday, September 19, at the American Legion in Ellaville. I would also like to thank Mrs. Lettie Royal, Master Quilt Maker, for making and donating Special Quilts that have raised thousands of dollars for the organization over the past three years. Thanks also go to Larry Wall for preparing the delicious bar-b-que that everyone enjoyed for dinner. Over 200 lbs of BBQ was sold at the event. Net proceeds for the Auction, BBQ, quilt raffle and 50/50 raffle totaled over $7,000.
Net proceeds from the auction totaled almost $4,000 and included 192 items that were donated by area businesses, historical society members and local individuals. Items included everything from a gun cabinet made by past local artisan Monroe Hanner, a pair of Georgia Boots from Shiver Lumber Co., a John Deere tricycle from Albany Tractor Co., to two metal Wildcat championship baseball signs made by FLIR and Jason Hoch.
A very special thanks to the Auction Committee whose members are too numerous to mention. The committee was so efficient that they organized, displayed, numbered and set up the auction within three hours. The clerk, cashiers, displayers and ring men did an excellent job to make the auction both exciting and fun.
This auction brought back a lot of old memories of the Ellaville/Schley County Community Improvement Association auctions of the past. Many people do not realize that the chandelier and marble table in the foyer of the Schley County Courthouse were purchased along with many other items through local benefit auctions that were held at the Old Ellaville Gym.
It is important that we preserve the history of Ellaville and Schley County. Preservation of the Schley County Courthouse is underway and is just the first step. Think about all the local historic homes, churches, businesses and cemeteries in Schley County that might disappear forever without your help with preservation and conservation efforts. The Ellaville/Schley County Historical Society provides an excellent venue for preservation efforts to begin.
