AMERICUS — The Americus Police Department has ruled a shooting in north Americus as an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Local police and the Region III Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had investigated the shooting incident that occurred at 11 p.m. Wednesday in the area of North Lee and Redrick streets.
Maj. Richard McCorkle, who heads the investigative division of the Americus Police Department, said the victim told police he had been shot and crashed his vehicle in the area. The man, Markus D. Adams, 21, of 933-B Oglethorpe Ave., Americus, was airlifted to a Macon hospital for treatment.
McCorkle said a .40-caliber hand gun was recovered.
Meanwhile, another man was arrested for disorderly conduct near the scene.
Police reports state that while authorities were working the crime scene at the shooting incident, a man knocked on his grandmother’s door on Redrick Street.. The woman met the man at the front door but he pushed by her and entered her residence. Police knocked on the woman’s front door and identified themselves as police; they heard the woman say, “come get him out of here” and shouting that he had a gun. Police entered the residence and walked through it where they saw the man walk out a side door and walk along Redrick Street carrying a “brown long gun.” Police officers drew their weapons and ordered the man to drop his weapon. After several commands, the man complied.
Robert L. Sanders III, 36, of 228 Barnum Drive, Americus, was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and taken to the Sumter County Jail.
