AMERICUS — Mrs. Betty McElroy (affectionately known to many as Miss Betty or Nanny), 77, passed away at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center on Oct. 22, 2015. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, in the chapel at Aldridge Funeral Services. The Rev. Raymond Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery in Plains, Ga. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 24, 2015, at Aldridge Funeral Services, and at other times at the residence of Bennie and Gwen Picquet at 115 Lawhorn Circle, Americus, Ga.
Mrs. McElroy was born on July 10, 1938, the daughter of the late James Daniel Cox and the late Eula Susie Howell Cox. She was employed for 25 years at the Peanut Gallery in Plains, Ga. Mrs. McElroy was a member of Preston Baptist Church.
Mrs. McElroy is survived by her husband of 62 years, John H. McElroy. Also surviving are their six children which include three daughters: Gwen Picquet (Bennie) of Americus, Hilda McElroy of Plains, Marcia Roberts (Stan) of Preston; and three sons: Charles McElroy (Beth) of Abbeville, Ala., Joe McElroy (Marie) of Leslie, and Andy McElroy of Albany. Mrs. McElroy has one surviving sister, Laura Marsh (Gene), and four surviving brothers, George Cox (Gail), Hoyt Cox (Janice), Bill Cox, and Larry Cox. Grandchildren are: Joy Hernandez (Emilio), Mandy Butler (Brian), Kim Wright (Keith), Johnathan McElroy (Kassi), Ben Picquet (Ashley), Lindsay Picquet, Tiffany McElroy, Carole Wells (Justin), Chad McElroy (Crystal), Eric Gilbert, Brian Roberts, Daniel McElroy, and  Josh McElroy (Rebecca). A number of great-grandchildren also survive. Mrs. McElroy’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the building fund at Eastside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1896, Americus GA 31709 or to the van fund at Preston Baptist Church, P.O. Box 162, Preston, Georgia.
