Overtime loss leaves GSW mens’ soccer “Achin'”

AIKEN, S.C. – Georgia Southwestern sophomore forward, Silvio Polly, scored with 1:41 remaining in the second half to force overtime on Monday evening at the Pacer Pit, but USC Aiken delivered the decisive goal in the 96th minute to send GSW home with a 3-2 loss in Peach Belt Conference action.
Southwestern’s record drops to 1-11-2 overall, 0-8-1 in the PBC, while USC Aiken improved its mark to 6-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the PBC.
The two sides played a scoreless first half. USCA’s Andre Simmond provided the first goal of the contest in the 58th minute.
Senior, Charlie Curran, answered for the Hurricanes when he capitalized on a free kick in the 66th minute to even the score at 1-1.
The match appeared to be heading for overtime until Jordan Misiri took a pass from Simmond and put the Pacers ahead, 2-1, with 3:28 remaining.
Polly delivered the equalizer less than two minutes later.
GSW drew a red card in the overtime session, forcing the Hurricanes to play a man down, and Rodrigo Goncalves quickly took advantage of the situation when he delivered the decisive goal for USCA in the 96th minute.
USCA finished with the shots on goal (9-4) and corner kicks (6-3) advantage.
Senior, Garrett Blamire, saved six shots for GSW. Chase Boulton stopped two for USCA in regulation play. Andre Bernardini played the overtime session and did not face a shot.
The Hurricanes host Spring Hill College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the season finale.
