AMERICUS – Forward Silvio Polly scored with 2:02 left in the second half to lift Georgia Southwestern to a 1-0 non-conference win over Spring Hill College on the afternon of Nov. 1 at Hurricane Field.
After both sides went scoreless in the first half, GSW built up some momentum on the offensive end early in the second period. The Hurricanes continued to press, but fell short of converting on several occasions. GSW outshot Spring Hill 11-1 over the final 45 minutes.
The Hurricanes were finally able to break through when DJ Garrett, Chris Steinwachs and Polly pushed down the left side of the field in the 88th minute. Garrett punched the ball in to Steinwachs, who found a trailing Polly down the middle for the winning score.
GSW finished the match with a 10-2 shots on goal advantage and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Garrett Blamire saved two shots for GSW to record the clean sheet. It was the Hurricanes first shutout since Sept. 26, 2014. Jacob Files stopped eight for Spring Hill.
GSW finished the season with a record of 2-11-2 overall while Spring Hill’s campaign concluded with a mark of 3-13. Polly provided the Hurricanes scoring bookends for the 2015 season as he punched in the first goal of the fall on Sept. 3 in the fifth minute against Point.
Southwestern seniors Jamie Wall, Charlie Curran, Onorio Molina, Zack Pirtle and Blamire, along with graduating junior Garrett were honored before the match.
