CARROLLTON – Yvonna Dunkley and Khayla Owens led the Georgia Southwestern women’s basketball team in their 58-56 win over West Georgia on Nov. 18 at The Coliseum in Carrolton.
Dunkley put GSW on the board first with a three-pointer and West Georgia tied it up one minute later. Kenyona Armstrong put GSW up by three after a jump shot and free throw. West Georgia made two baskets to take a one point lead with 3:47 left in the first frame.
The Wolves made three free throws and a lay up to take their largest lead by six with 1:45 remaining. Aleah Holden put in a lay up but the Wolves countered and led by five after the first quarter.
Emily Russ made two free throws at the start of the second stanza to cut the lead by two and Dunkley made a three-pointer to tie the game. The game was tied five more times before Chanice Whitton made a layup to give the Lady ‘Canes a one point lead going into half time.
The rest of the game remained a tug of war between points and leaders. The largest lead of the game came in the fourth frame when GSW led by seven.
GSW was leading 58-52 after Sesler made a layup with 2:39 remaining. West Georgia made four free throws to come within a basket. The Wolves missed six opportunites to tie or win the game but the last two minutes of the game remained scoreless and GSW took the two-point win.
Dunkley scored ten points while Owens captured a career high nine rebounds as GSW moved to 3-0 in the season.
Ja’Quasha Sesler put up nine points for the Lady ‘Canes and seven rebounds, Va’Queshia Hall had nine points and six rebounds. Jasmine McSwain joined the nine points squad for the game and had four rebounds. Holden had seven points and seven rebounds.
The Lady ‘Canes are return to Americus on Nov. 21, facing Southeastern University in the Storm Dome at 3:00 p.m.
