AMERICUS — Georgia Trend magazine ranks Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital No. 5 among top teaching hospitals in Georgia and Phoebe Sumter Medical Center No. 9 among the state’s top small hospitals.
The magazine’s 2015 Top Hospitals report is based on information from the U.S. Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which tracks 40 quality-related indicators, including patient experience, outcomes of care, process of care, and efficiency and value of the services rendered.
Rankings are determined by grouping hospitals of similar size and mission into four categories: teaching hospitals, large hospitals (more than 250 patient beds, medium hospitals (100-249 beds) and small hospitals (fewer than 100 beds).
“We are proud to have two hospitals included on this list,” said Joel Wernick, CEO of Phoebe Putney Health System. “Our residency program continues to be a success and benefits our community and state, by providing well-trained and well-educated family physicians to patients.”
Since 1993, Phoebe has been home to the Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency Program, which has graduated 104 resident physicians. The program has proven successful with 70 percent of residency graduates currently practicing in Georgia and more than half in Southwest Georgia. In addition, Phoebe is the hub of the Medical College of Georgia’s Southwest Georgia Clinical Campus for third-and fourth-year students, and partners with the University of Georgia Pharmacy School.
Georgia Trend analyzed data from July 2015 that was made public by CMS and the Georgia hospitals that participate in its national Hospital Value Based Purchasing Program which bases payment on quality of care, not just quantity.
Brandi Lunneborg, CEO, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, credits the hospitals’ ranking to physicians and staff, who she says “do an excellent job of caring for our patients and ensuring they receive the best possible healthcare.”
Phoebe Sumter features 76 all-private patient rooms, provides patients access to advanced medical technologies and a broad array of specialty services, including oncology, orthopedics, cardiology, and a bariatrics program
