A word from Sumter Cycling: Holiday gift ideas for the cyclist in your life

With Christmas just around the corner, you may be stumped on a gift for your favorite cyclist. Here are a few suggestions.
Safety should be the first thought – a helmet, reflectors, blinking lights to mount on the bike, rearview mirror for bike or helmet, and reflective vest. Cycling glasses are not only good protection from the sun’s rays, but protection from flying objects such as bees and other insects.
For the techy cyclist, a computer with a GPS system or a watch with a GPS system is always helpful on a long ride.
If you are considering apparel, bright colors for jerseys are a must. Other ideas include leg and arm warmers, covers for toes of shoes or covers that go over the complete shoe. A bright colored jacket, socks, or gloves are a also good choice. A gift of cycling shorts with padding may not be a good idea as most cyclists are very particular about the brand they prefer.
For the commuters,  a bike bag for front handle bars to transport laptops, etc., and a basket to carry all the necessary items required for their commute can really come in handy.
On a long ride, more than 20 miles, most cyclists will carry a sports bar for snacking. There are dozens of brands available. Some are palatable, some are not. Buy a few for taste testing and let the cyclist decide their favorite brand. Of course, every cyclist needs a water bottle to stay hydrated as well.
If you really want to spend a lot of money, a bike would be a nice gift. If you decide to go this route, consider a gift certificate from your local bike shop. No matter what price level bike is being considered, purchasing the correct frame size is a priority. Many people abandon cycling because their bike frame is either too small or too large for their body type. Bike shops’ staff are trained to evaluate the rider for the correct size and adjust it for the most comfortable and enjoyable ride.
Lastly, a gift certificate for a full body massage would be an ideal stocking suffer for any cyclist.
