ALBANY – Sophomore forward, Molly Brown, sank four key three point shots to help lift the South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets to a 68–54 win over the Darton State College Lady Cavaliers in Albany on Jan. 6. The Lady Jets returned to the court on Jan. 11 to earn a 103-51 victory and remain in first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) standings.
“It is always difficult to go to Darton and win,” said SGTC Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey on the Jan. 6 match. “Coach Henry has her teams ready to play and they always play hard. I am very happy with our effort and the fact that we really executed in the second half and were able to come up with the win.”
The Lady Jets are now 6–1 in the GCAA standings and 16–4 overall.
Frey congratulated all of his players on a great performance against Darton but had special words of encouragement for three of his sophomores. “I thought Angela Tompkins had her best game of the year and that Molly Brown and Cierra Bond both made several huge threes in the second half that enabled us to stretch the lead a little,” he said.
Tompkins was the leading scorer of the night for the Lady Jets with 24 points, 10 of which came in the first half when the Lady Jets managed to take a 28–21 lead. Tompkins shot nine of 12 from the field and was six of six from the free throw line. She also had nine rebounds and one steal. She was the GCAA player of the week last week for the third time this season.
Bond was the next leading scorer with 17 points. She was seven of ten from the field including two of four from the three-point line. Bond also came up with four rebounds on the night. Thirteen of her 17 points came in the second half.
Brown wound up with 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half. She hit six of 13 shots from the field and four of seven from the three-point line. She also had five rebounds on the night as well as four assists and four steals.
Brittney Delva did an excellent job of handling the ball before fouling out. She wound up with three points, three rebounds, and seven assists. Other Lady Jets who scored included freshmen Mikaela Jones with four points and Le’Deja James and Kendra Green with two points each.
The Lady Jets continued their GCAA competition on Jan. 11, keeping their impressive conference streak alive with a 103-51 win over GCAA opponents, Chattahoochee Tech.
Tompkins led the team to victory with 23 points in this contest, followed closely by Claudia Perez, who tossed in 19. Bond added another 16, while Green added 11 and Brown contributed 10. Delva contributed 12 assists to the victory.
The Jets and Lady Jets play another conference game at home on Jan. 13 against Atlanta Metro.
