PLAINS — Augusta Mae Phillips Mathis died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Lillian Carter Nursing Center in Plains. She was born on Dec. 6, 1933, as Dorothy Mae Holland in Richland, Ga. She was kindly adopted by the late Dr. Walter and Mrs. Lora Phillips when her birth mother died, leaving five young children. Augusta worked for many years as a lab technician for Dr. Jim Dudley and Dr. Bud Robinson. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 23 years where she was a member of the Wesley Class, Young at Heart and an honorary member of the Quilters’ Group.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church of Americus with the Rev. Bill Dupree and the Rev. Jerry Roe officiating. The family will receive visitors, in the church parlor, following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Lee St., Americus GA 31709.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Linda G. Mathis; a sister, Geneva Holland Wright of Phoenix City, Ala.; a brother, George E. Holland Sr. of Forest City, N.C., and two cousins, Margaret Phillips of Georgetown, Ala., and C.E. Phillips Jr. of Landon, Miss. She is also survived by her devoted friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip G. Mathis; her birth parents, Julia Virginia Hester and Carl P. Holland Sr., and two brothers, Carl Holland Jr. and Robert Lee Holland.
