TIFTON — Charlie Mathews Barnes, age 79, of 100-C Cantey Drive, Cobb, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton. A native of Sylvester, he was born April 18, 1936, the son of the late James and Louise Barnes. Charlie was of the Baptist faith, a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed as farm manager for Plantation Services. He attended the University of Georgia on a football scholarship and remained a “Dawg” fan for life. He was also the owner of Spring Creek Marina also known as “Booger Bottom.” He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, at First Baptist Church with Matt Braswell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church, and at other times 100-C Cantey Drive, Cobb. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Georgia Sheriff’s Boy’s Ranch, 5671 Ga. Highway 122 East, Hahira GA 31632.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sue Barnes of Cobb; a daughter, Renae Barnes of Cobb; two sons and daughter-in-law, Rick Barnes and Sandy of Cobb and Russ and Jarret Barnes of Americus; and seven grandchildren, Ben Barnes, Stephen Barnes, Morgan Youngdale, Rylan Youngdale, Charlie Kellum, Anslee Barnes and Ellie Barnes.
