Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of certain Maytag Blue Cheese products distributed in Georgia due to potential health risk. Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) inspectors will be checking retail stores and warehouses to make sure the recalled products have been removed from sale. Here is the information via the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

Maytag Dairy Farms is recalling “Maytag Blue” blue cheese wedges, wheels and crumbles because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms (high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea), but the infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

To date, no illnesses have been reported.

This recall includes certain lots of 1-, 4- and 8-ounce wedges as well as 2- and 4-pound wheels, 8-ounce crumbles, and 5-pound crumbles. The recalled product was sold through distributors, wholesalers, retail stores, restaurants and direct mail orders nationwide between Nov. 24 and Feb. 11.
