Qualifying continues

AMERICUS — Qualifying for the May 24 General Primary continues until 5 p.m. today, March 10, and from 8 a.m.-noon on Friday at the Sumter County Courthouse.
The following candidates have qualified as Republicans.
• Pete Smith (incumbent), sheriff
• Phillip Daniel, sheriff
• George Torbert (incumbent), District 3, Board of Commissioners
• Scott Aldridge, Republican, coroner
Qualifying as Democrats, as of Thursday afternoon, were the following.
• Misty Harry, clerk of Superior Court
• Greg Hancock (incumbent), coroner
• Connie Johnson (incumbent), chief judge, Magistrate Court
• Wilkie Smith (incumbent), tax commissioner
• Thomas Jordan (incumbent), District 5, Board of Commissioners
Other candidates for the May 24 Primary are also qualifying this week in Atlanta. They include U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Georgia General Assembly, and offices of District Attorneys.
Candidates for the Nonpartisan General Elections on May 24 are also qualifying in Atlanta, Macon and Tifton this week. They include the Georgia Supreme Court, Georgia Court of Appeals, and Georgia Superior Court seats.
The following had qualified as of Thursday afternoon.
• Jimmie Brown, Judge of Superior Court, Southwestern Judicial Circuit
• Kevin Kwashnak, Judge of Superior Court, Southwestern Judicial Circuit
• Lewis R. Lamb, Judge of Superior Court, Southwestern Judicial Circuit
These three are candidates to fill the bench as Judge George Peagler retires.
• R. Rucker Smith (incumbent), Judge of Superior Court, Southwestern Judicial Circuit
In the Republican and Democrat realms, the following candidates have qualified as of Thursday afternoon:
• Mike Cheokas (incumbent), Republican, Georgia House of Representatives, District 138
• Tommy Pilcher, Republican, Georgia House of Representatives, District 138
• Bill McGowan, Democrat, Georgia House of Representatives, District 138
• Plez H. Hardin (incumbent), District Attorney, Southwestern Judicial Circuit
• Greg Kirk (incumbent), Republican, State Senate, District 13
• Ruenett Melton, Democrat, State Senate, District 13
