Calhoun sets new Southland record at Nike Panther Relays meet

FAYETTEVILLE – Eight Southland men’s track athletes traveled to Fayetteville on the morning of March 5 to compete in the prestigious Nike Panther Relays, hosted by Starr’s Mill High School.
Southland runner, Wright Calhoun, hit a new school record in the showcase 3200 meter run, finishing the race in eighth place with a time of 9:55.6.
Southland’s Ellis Ivey ran personal best times in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdle events.
Seniors, Calhoun, Ivey, Ridge Roland, Brian Miller, and Josiah Copland participated in the meet. Junior, Billy Calcutt; Sophomore, Morgan Youngdale;  and Freshman, Bennett Carey competed as well.
The Southland athletes participated in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, the sprint medley and distance medley relays, and the 4 x 400 relay.
Each athlete ran multiple events against top-level GHSA competition. Southland was the only GISA school invited to the meet.
The Varsity Men and Women return to action on March 12 at the Brookstone Cougar Relays in Columbus while the Middle School travels to Landmark Christian in Fairburn.
