100 miles of treasures from the Flint to the Chattahoochee

PLAINS — The River-to-River Yard Sale on Saturday, April 9 will join the ranks of several other 100-mile ribbons that stretch across Georgia throughout the year offering treasures and troves. Participation is free. Individuals may set up in their yards or in “official”  locations on the route along U.S. Highway 280 and Ga. Highway 27 from Veterans State Park at Lake Blackshear on the Flint River, to Georgetown on the Chattahochee River.
The official hours for the yard sale are from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Early birds may be welcome along the route, but latecomers will miss the best bargains and biggest finds. The River-to-River Yard Sale is being coordinated by organizations in the individual towns along the route. Registration and participation are free.
The hours for the yard sale coincide with the hours for the April 9 Plains Car Show, which anchors the yard sale this year. The car show is an eye-popper. More than 100 classics, antiques and muscle cars will line the streets of Plains. President Jimmy Carter will select his favorite car, which will receive the “President Carter” award. More than 90 other trophies will be awarded about 3 p.m.
The River-to-River Yard Sale joins the venerable Peaches-to-Beaches Yard Sale, which was held last weekend. This “granddaddy” of the Georgia yard sales was organized 12 years ago. It stretches from Barnesville to Brunswick through 12 participating communities along U.S. Highway 341.
The 100-Mile Peanut Pickin’ Yard Sale, which runs from Unadilla to Quitman, has also offered a model for the River-to-River. This yard sale started in Worth County six years ago and has been adopted by several towns along the route since. It is held the second Saturday in October.
This new initiative is another example of good ideas promoting tourism in South Georgia being shared among communities and organizations of all types. The following communities are participating in the River-to-River Yard Sale: Georgetown, Lumpkin, Richland, Preston, Plains and Leslie.
