AMERICUS — On March 9, the Lake Blackshear Regional Library hosted the official opening of their newly renovated Teen Zone. This renovation was spearheaded by Davis Comer as his Eagle Scout Project. Comer is a member of Boy Scout Troop 26 located in Americus. Over the course of almost a year, he planned the layout of the area, selected the furniture, removed the books and shelving, painted the walls, replaced the shelving and the books, assembled the furniture and added the signs. What was once a bland alcove in the back of the library is now a vibrant, inviting space for young adults who can relax while they are using the library’s wireless Internet, reading a book, or downloading free eBooks.
And, yes, according to library director, Anne Isbell, young adults really are reading.
“We are constantly struggling to keep up with their demand for new books,” she said. “The funding for this project was provided from bequest money the library received that has allowed us to make a number of improvements to our building, services, and collection.”
Children and Youth Services Coordinator, Beth Tanner added, “This project would never have happened without the hard work of Davis Comer. We are very grateful to him and to Troop 26 for providing this lasting legacy to the library.”
