PRESTON — Voters in Webster County will soon have the chance to meet, hear from and ask questions of the nine candidates vying for four elected offices in Webster County. A candidate forum has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 21st at the Webster County Agricultural Extension/4-H building at 7235 Washington St. (Ga. Highway 41) in Preston.
In the Democratic primary race for Chairman of the Webster County Commission, EMS/Fire Chief Darrell Holbrook and former Sheriff, Tony Kennedy, are competing for the opportunity to run the county on a daily basis. No candidate qualified on the Republican ballot, so barring a bid by an independent candidate, the winner of the May 24 primary election will not face opposition in the November General Election.
In the race for District 1 on the Webster County Board of Commissioners, incumbent Jonah McCluster, a retired school teacher who was first elected in 2002, is facing political newcomer Glynn Cobb, an instructor at South Georgia Technical College. Both qualified on the Democratic ticket.
In the non-partisan race for District 1 on the Webster County Board of Education, the Rev. Jimmie Johnson and DeNiece Stevens, spouse of Nehemiah Stevens, the incumbent, are competing to fill the seat being vacated.
In the race to succeed Lou Heath, who is retiring as Tax Commissioner after serving 28 consecutive years, Marjorie Hine, Tracy Holbrook and Marie Stanfield are vying against each other on the Democratic ballot. To win the nomination outright, a candidate must garner 50 percent plus one of all ballots cast. If no candidate prevails in the primary election, a run-off election will be held on July 26.
Dave Wills, former chairman of the Webster County Board of Commissioners, will moderate the candidate forum, and is working in concert with the Webster County Board of Commissioners to plan and moderate the forum.
