MACON COUNTY — The Sumter County Fire & Rescue Dive Team visited Whitewater Creek Park recently to perform an examination on the beach fencing. The Dive Team is a newly established unit of the Sumter County Fire & Rescue Department and welcomed the opportunity to explore the water at Whitewater Creek Park. The exercise provided benefit to the unit by offering a training opportunity and a benefit to Macon County by providing a thorough examination of the fencing in the water at the beach area in the park. Improvements to the fencing will be made as part of the on-going repairs and upgrades being made at the park.
Park manager, Adam Tramel and Macon County Board of Commissioners chairman, Mickey George were present during the exercise. George said that he was glad that we were able to examine the fence and get a clear idea of the work that’s needed.
The team is led by Dive Team Officer in Charge Jerry Harmon who is the department’s Training Officer. With over 20 years of experience as a firefighter, Harmon has been with Sumter County since 2010, and coordinator for the Dive Team since its inception. Five team members participated in the exercise which lasted approximately two hours. The team provided information to the County regarding the condition of the fencing and other specifications.
Chief John Ekaitis, Sumter Fire Rescue, approved the training exercise.
