Schley County Board of Commissioners recognized
On July 12, the Schley County Board of Commissioners held its monthly meeting.
Chairman Greg Barineau called the meeting to order with Dennis Jones opening with prayer.
Nancy McMath Young, representing the Ellaville -Schley County Historical Society Inc., recognized each commissioner and the Schley County manager, and presented a plaque which read “Special Recognition goes to the Schley County Commissioners for the Renovation of the Schley County Court House, that was completed on May 19, 2016.”
Names on the plaque are Chairman Greg Barineau, Co- Chair Douglas Jamieson, Sandra Kay Royal, Angeli Smith and Dennis Jones and County Manager Bill Sawyer.

Schley County C-Heart board meets
On July 14, the Schley County C-Heart board met in the Conference Room of the Schley County Courthouse.
Kristy Smith, Schley County’s Health nurse, called the meeting to order.
Tamber Fuller of Columbus presented an educational program, “Point of Dispensing (POD),” dealing with what to do in a case of a disaster or emergency for people who need medication. A POD site is where medications and vaccinations can be dispensed to a large number of people in the event of a naturally occurring disease outbreak or a bio-terrorism event. PODs may be be selected by a collaborative effort between the Public Health Department, Emergency Management, and local law enforcement.
PODs could include a walk- in or a drive-through location.
It will take a lot of volunteers for an emergency like this. We hope and pray we don’t need  this, but we’d rather be prepared.
Kristy Smith is in charge of this emergency POD in case we need one.
The C-Heart board members that attended were Duane Register, Duane Montgomery, Kristy Smith, Nancy McMath Young, Robbie Lightner, Brian Justice, Michael Hortman, Shane Tondee, all of Ellaville and Pam Fair, Tamber Fuller and Hank Wilson, all of Columbus.
Schley County Library Reading Program ends with art
The Schley County Library Summer Reading Program ended with a special art program.
The children painted special banners in red, white and blue to be hung downtown in the store windows throughout July. When the art is taken down each child will take their own piece home to display. The designs were drawn on the banners by Linda Adams and Nell Wall.

Schley County Schools open soon
The teachers of the Schley County Schools will return to school on July 25. They will be making plans for their classes as well as preparing for the Open and getting ready for the first day of school.
Pre-K will have its Open House from 6-7 p.m. July 27 at the Schley County Board of Education Building. The elementary school will have its Open House for kindergarten and first, third and fifth grades from 4:30-5:30 p.m. July 28, and from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for the second and fourth grades. The Schley Middle-High School hosts its Open House from 6-7:30 p.m. July 28.
Parents should plan to bring their children to Open House and get the list of school supplies that they will need for the new school year.
The first day of school will be on Friday, July 29, when the school bells ring for the 2016-2017 school year for our children.

Schley County Citizens Corps for entire community
The Schley County Citizens Corps is a group of local citizens that came together a few years ago to help prepare the community to be able to help themselves and others in a case of emergency. The Citizens Corps is a Community Emergency Response Team that plans, prepares and responds to emergencies. This is a Christian-based team that works and cares for others through God. They engage in the whole community by being prepared to protect lives after natural disasters in our local community.
The Citizen Corps’ vision is to create preparedness by partnership between the local and state government, local businesses, industry, volunteers and the citizens of Schley County.
What are they doing now? They are preparing for a disaster. They also praying we don’t have a disaster. They are preparing emergency response teams, providing first aid and CPA training, preparing an emergency shelter  for the county and preparing education on how to be ready for any emergencies.
What can the community do to help this special Schley County Citizens Corps Team?  Join them at the next meeting and take advantage of the information and training that they can provide. Prepare yourself and your family for an emergency situation. Help yourself so you can help others at a time of need.
The Citizen Corps meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month in the Kings Custom Builders Cafeteria.

Every home should have a three-day supply of food (non-perishable canned), medications, water, flash lights and batteries, battery operated radios, garbage bags, moist towelettes, family documents, baby formula, glasses, 3 to 4 gallons of water per person in the home, sleeping bags, blankets, a change of clothing for the whole family, matches in a waterproof container and more. Let’s all get out and get our supplies for our homes and families’ safety in case of a disaster.
