Sumter County remains under threat of  Tropical Storm Hermine that is expected to impact south and east Georgia beginning between 2 and 5 a.m. Friday when feeder bands from the storm spread across this area.

Winds could be up to 31 mph in Sumter County from 10 p.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday and rainfall could be up to 2.6 inches. Maximum sustained winds could reach 21 mph and result in downed trees and power lines.

The threat of tornadoes will diminish early Friday morning as the center of the storm passes through Sumter County.

Residents are reminded to secure outside items and make sure pets are adequately sheltered.

Due to impending severe weather, the Sumter County School System will be closed Friday, Sept. 2 for students and employees. All school-related activities both during the school day and after school are cancelled. Schools will reopen and classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016.

South Georgia Technical College is closing its Americus and Cordele campuses due to the weather for Friday, Sept. 2.

Albany State College and Darton College are closed Friday due to inclement weather.
