BUTLER — Graveside services for Carter H. Matthews Jr., 82, of Butler were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley, Georgia. Mr. Matthews passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, at his residence.
Mr. Matthews was born Feb. 3, 1934, to the parentage of the late Emily Norton Matthews and Carter Hutchinson Matthews Sr.
He attended Farragut Naval Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida. He also attended and graduated from Emory at Oxford Preparatory School. Later, Mr. Matthews attended the University of Georgia where he graduated with a degree in a business administration.
Mr. Matthews proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. During the Korean Conflict, he served on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Midway, as a plane captain. After leaving the Navy, he pursued his favorite pastime, flying. He earned his pilot’s license and flew wherever possible.
He was the president of C.H. Matthews & Sons, Inc., part owner of TLC Lawn Care and Peach Lawn Care.
On Sept. 18, 1955, he married his one true love, Ouida Matthews.
He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Charles Norton Matthews.
He leaves behind Ouida Matthews, his wife of 61 years; four children, Anne Roland (Mike) of Butler, Nancy Wood (Stewart) of Fort Valley, Beth Smith (Mike) of Plains, and Bill Matthews (Melissa) of Homosassa, Florida; one daughter-in-law, (Julie Watson) of Mauk.
He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Dustin Roland (Nikki) of Perry, Dylan Wood (Kaylen) of Fort Valley, Ethan Smith and Cauldin Smith of Plains, Cody Matthews and Hannah Matthews of Mauk, and Robert Roland of Butler. He also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Dalton Carter Roland and Carter Hutchinson Wood.
