The Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Hurricanes and Lady Hurricanes soccer teams hit the road on Sept. 7 for their second contests of the 2016 season.
The Hurricanes traveled to West Point, Ga. to take on Point University, earning a 3-0 victory to bring the team’s record to 1-1 on the season. The Lady ‘Canes fared well also in their trip to Franklin Springs, Ga., winning their match 2-1 over Emmanuel College, earning the team a 2-0 record to date on the season.
GSW senior forward, Isaac Avila, scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Hurricanes past Point University.
All of the scoring on came within a span of less than four minutes midway through the first half.
Junior, Silvio Polly, put the Hurricanes on the board in the 25th minute off an assist from Avila. Sophomore, Jonathan Sayers, made it a two goal advantage 109 seconds later when he punched in his first collegiate goal with an assist from Avila.
The Hurricanes managed to shave a few more seconds off the time they needed to score on the last goal of the evening as Avila followed up Sayers’ score in 88 seconds.
GSW finished with a 5-1 shots on goal advantage. Corner kicks were tied, 4-4.
Junior, Joshua Swift, saw seven shots between the pipes for GSW, but only had to make a play on one. Ned Avies stopped one for Point before making way for Jacab Price at the break. Price saved one in the second half.
Khayla Owens scored the winning goal for the Lady Hurricanes against Emmanuel College in overtime.
Emmanuel scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute unassisted and GSW trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Ella Hawkins tied the game with 13 minutes remaining and GSW’s defense held off the Lions to force overtime.
After six minutes of play, Owens booted one to the back of the net with the assist from Shelbi Walker to take the 2-1 victory.
Elyse Gowen faced four shots, made three saves and took the win for GSW.
GSW finished with 10 shots, four of which were on goal while Emmanuel had 16 shots, six of which were on goal. Shatyriah Crawford had four shots, Hawkins and Owens each had two and Bri Reda had one.
Both teams will return to action in Americus on Sept. 10, with the men taking on Faulkner University at 3:30 and the Lady ‘Canes battling West Georgia at 1:00.
