AMERICUS — Future physicians got a chance to view the current landscape of healthcare in Americus and Sumter County during the annual Windshield Tour hosted by South Georgia Technical College.
The Mercer School of Medicine students toured Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, the Sumter County Health Department and Sumter County Department of Family & Children Services. The sightseeing stops also included the city’s landmarks.
During the visit to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center campus, students had the opportunity to talk with physicians and other health care professionals. They visited the organization’s three outpatient clinics as well as the 76-bed hospital. Phoebe Sumter opened in 2011, and was named Most Beautiful Hospital in the United States in 2011. The 183,000 square-foot facility has all private rooms and about 3,000 admissions annually from its eight-county service area.
The medical students were introduced to issues on today’s healthcare delivery and physician need in settings from the hospital to the community. Phoebe Sumter CNO Susan Bruns welcomed the students during lunch and veteran local gynecologist Wallace Mays, MD delivered words of encouragement to the beginning students.
