PLAINS — From a very early age, President Jimmy Carter held an appreciation for the natural world that surrounded him on his father’s 360-acre farm. Growing up without electricity, Carter would have witnessed many wonderful and crystal-clear views of the night sky. As part of the National Park Service’s Centennial “Find Your Park” campaign, it will host a Star Gazing Astronomy Program at Plains High School.
Come join park staff, Georgia Southwestern State University’s Samuel Peavy, Ph.D. and Svilen Kostov, Ph.D., as well as fellow stargazing enthusiasts as they explore the wonders of the night sky. The event will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Plains High School Visitor Center and Museum.
A short presentation will be held in the auditorium of Plains High School, and the program will then head out to the baseball field of Plains High School to view the night sky. Although there will be a few telescopes and high powered binoculars available for public use, it is encouraged that attendees who have their own equipment bring it along for their own personal use. Guests are also encouraged to bring water, a flashlight, as well as a blanket, towel, or lawn chair. In the event of rain or cloudy weather the program will be held in Plains High School auditorium.
This event is free and open to the public.
